The Lung Health Research Center was established in 1986 under the direction of Dr. Richard E. Kanner, as part of the first major initiative of The Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in screening for an intervention in early lung disease. Principal Investigators for the Lung Health Research Center are Drs. Richard Kanner and Mary Beth Scholand.

The first lung health study involved a randomized clinical trial involving 10 clinical centers in the United States and Canada that enrolled 5,887 male and female smokers age 35-60 years with early chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
