OBST 7030  Externship in Perinatal Medicine (4 weeks)

The goal of this elective is to familiarize the student with the field of maternal-fetal medicine (also known as perinatal medicine, or "high risk" obstetrics). This is primarily an outpatient experience based in the University of Utah’s Maternal-Fetal Diagnostic Center. Students will spend time in 2 main areas: (a) the perinatology clinic, working 1-on-1 with attending MFM physicians and Certified Nurse Midwives, and (b) ultrasound, working with obstetric sonographers and attending physicians who read the ultrasound examinations, to gain experience with basic ultrasound techniques and visualization of both normal and abnormal fetal anatomy. The distribution of time in each area can be individualized to fit each student's learning needs and interests.

Students may also take  call shifts on Labor and Delivery if desired, and will attend the Department of OB/GYN’s Thursday afternoon didactic sessions.

OBST 7040  Gynecologic Oncology Sub-Internship (4 weeks)

The Gynecologic Oncology sub-internship will offer medical students at the fourth year level a comprehensive 4-week experience in Gynecologic Oncology. Students will be exposed to a rigorous clinical experience in the outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings that closely parallels the responsibilities and work load of an intern on the Gynecologic Oncology service. Faculty for the rotation include Dr. Melissa Brackmann, Dr. Mark Dodson, Dr. Rob Dood, Dr. Kate Harris, Dr. Kate Maurer, and Dr. Andrew Pat Soisson.

OBST 7050  Core Sub-Internship in OB/GYN (4 weeks)

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Sub-Internship is a 4-week immersive course in which students expand their fund of knowledge and clinical skills during a rigorous clinical experience in which patient care responsibilities, workload, and work hours closely parallel those of a resident intern in the specialty.

OBST 7080  Independent Study/Research (4-8 weeks)

This elective allows the fourth-year student to pursue a particular interest in obstetrics and gynecology under faculty supervision and mentorship. The student is required to undertake a clinical, educational, or laboratory research project (or literature review) which will culminate in the preparation of a document of sufficient quality to merit abstract presentation at a regional/national meeting or publication of a paper in a peer-reviewed journal. Students will work under the guidance of the faculty member whose interest and expertise specifically relate to the project. Participation is on a full-time basis for a four to eight-week period.

OBST 7100  Preceptorship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (4 weeks) 

The student will learn to evaluate and manage patients with amenorrhea, androgen excess, infertility, premenstrual syndrome and menopause. The educational experience will be clinical and didactic, not surgical (although a limited amount of operating room time will be available).

The student will:

• participate in outpatient clinics with members of the division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
• attend weekly conferences of the In Vitro Fertilization Program and assist in some of its procedures
• attend all relevant teaching conferences in the Department
• participate in specified tutorial sessions with Division members
• prepare and deliver a 30-minute presentation to the division faculty and fellows on an approved topic of the student’s choice.

OBST 7110  Women’s Health Elective (2 weeks)

This elective is offered to students to explore and experience areas of women's health in an outpatient setting. There is the opportunity to incorporate areas of particular interest or areas which have not been included in prior clerkship rotations. This elective will provide exposure to a broad spectrum of topics women's health, not a comprehensive and focused training. Students will attend outpatient clinics with faculty members of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and will participate in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of ambulatory gynecology problems such as well woman screening, contraception, STI management, vulvovaginitis, abnormal uterine bleeding, menopause, management of abnormal Pap smears, and routine obstetrics. There is also the opportunity for participation in outpatient ultrasound. 

Students will be provided with the ACOG Compendium for reading assignments. Students will meet with the faculty advisor at the start and completion of the rotation to discuss goals, schedules, and reading for the rotation. 

OBST 7120  Family Planning (2 weeks)

The student will learn to evaluate and manage patients’ family planning needs, including contraception and pregnancy termination. The educational experience will be clinical and didactic, with exposure to both medical and surgical termination of pregnancy.

The student will:

• participate in outpatient clinics and surgical procedures with members of the division of Family Planning
• participate in other outpatient gynecology clinics, with a focus on complex contraception and office-based procedures
• attend all relevant teaching conferences in the Division and the Department
