Resident Research

A COLLABORATIVE & SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT

Residents at the University of Utah in the Department of Orthopaedics involve themselves in the process of inquiry and advance the field of orthopedic surgery. Through mentoring relationships with our faculty, residents learn the research process of asking questions rigorously, evaluating the current and past literature on a focused subject all while planning and executing an experiment or series of experiments to fill an identified gap in knowledge.

Residents also gain experience with the presentation of data and how it feels to be an expert in a focused area of academic knowledge and inquiry. Ideally, each resident produces a portfolio of research outputs that enable success in the fellowship application process and the launch of an academic career thereafter for any who desires it.

I also believe firmly in the synergy possible in collaborative team science. Such efforts are required for progress toward improved treatments for rare malignancies that can never be studied with optimal efficacy in a silo. With such collaborative work as direct goal, I have participated in and assembled teams to work on pediatric sarcomas both within my institution and internationally.
