ReStoreD

Promoting resilience in stroke survivor-care

WHAT:

ReStoreD is an 8-week program designed to support couples after one partner has had a stroke. Each week couples are provided education on topics including learning about effects of stroke on relationships, self-care, communication, intimacy after stroke, and connecting with others. Each weekly module contains psychoeducation about the topic, resources, links to videos, and activities partners can do alone or with each other. The activities are relatively brief and are grounded in positive psychology, including expressing gratitude, acts of kindness, and working towards a goal.

  • As part of the study, participating couples will be randomized to either start the program immediately or after an 8-week waitlist-period. Everyone who participates gets to do the program.
  • Both partners in the couple will be asked to complete four (4) sets of surveys: after enrolling, at 8 weeks, 16 weeks, and finally at 6 months follow-up.
  • All surveys can be completed online. If someone needs or prefers, our research assistants can also complete the surveys over the phone.
  • Each participant receives a $50 Amazon gift card after each of these surveys as a thank you.

WHY?

Stroke can have a profound impact on a person’s life as well as their family. There can be changes in romantic relationships and roles as well as changes in mood for persons who have had a stroke and the person’s partner. Although this is common, there are few evidence-based programs to support couples navigating their relationship in this new context. Our study aims to address this need.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:

We are looking for romantic couples where one partner has had a stroke at least 3 months to 3 years ago. Partners need to be living together and both need to be willing to sign up for the study. We include individuals who have mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment and/or aphasia but exclude those with severe impairment.

About Arts IRB

Following a pilot period where our program was evaluated with inpatients at the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital,  the research team is preparing to conduct a study of how the arts program affects quality of life long term, after patients leave the hospital. We aim to learn how people feel about the program and how it’s working, ask how quality of life has been affected, and understand the experience of those who have participated.
