Obstetrics Opportunities

Core Experiences

All residents will receive the following core obstetrics training experience.

  • Completion of the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course and certification during new intern orientation.
  • Robust didactic instruction, including training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for common obstetric indications during PGY1 didactics (including first trimester US for size/dates and viability, and third trimester US for presentation and amniotic fluid measurements).
  • 4 weeks of inpatient OB on L&D (days) during PGY1 year.
  • 4 weeks of a prenatal care rotation during PGY1 year, which includes working in clinic with family medicine attendings who provide obstetric care, as well as in maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) clinic, with nurse midwives, and in the lactation clinic. Residents have the opportunity to attend continuity care deliveries with patients seen on this rotation.
  • 4 to 6 weeks of inpatient OB on L&D (nights) during PGY2 year.
  • 2 days of inpatient OB on L&D during PGY3 year, during which time residents will provide coaching and mentoring to a new FM intern.
  • Attainment of at least 40 deliveries.
  • Care for own continuity clinic patients, inclusive of prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care; provision of delivery and postpartum care for at least 2 continuity patients.

Additional Opportunities

For residents with increased interest in obstetrics training, the following supplemental educational activities are available.

  • Numerous elective rotations to choose from, including additional time spent on L&D, as well as specialty rotations with OB emergency services, MFM, reproductive medicine, early pregnancy access clinic, maternal substance use clinic, community health center Federally Qualified Health Center (CHC FQHC) clinics, and an on-call delivery rotation with attendings.
  • Options to be involved in maternity care related research projects with faculty.
  • Options to be involved in maternity care related scholarship, including writing a review article for the Family Practice Inquiries Network (FPIN).
  • 4 weeks of a prenatal care rotation during PGY1 year, which includes working in clinic with family medicine attendings who provide obstetric care, as well as in maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) clinic, with nurse midwives, and in the lactation clinic. Residents have the opportunity to attend continuity care deliveries with patients seen on this rotation.
  • Teaching opportunities to present with faculty for resident didactics on various obstetric topics.

Obstetrics Track

For residents intending to include comprehensive pregnancy-related practice after residency, a dedicated obstetrics training track is available. Completion of an obstetrics track may be especially beneficial for residents considering working in a rural location, within a CHC (FQHC) or other under-resourced setting, in academics, or planning on pursuing an OB fellowship. Residents will be provided with an obstetrics track faculty advisor and mentor who will help guide them with completing the detailed components of the track, including choosing the rotation experiences that will best prepare them for their specific interests and career goals. Mentors will also be a main point of contact for residents with guidance in preparing for fellowship or job applications and interviews. Residents who complete the following track components will receive acknowledgement of this in their final program letter upon residency graduation, as well as a certificate highlighting this achievement.

  • Completion of 8 additional weeks of inpatient OB on L&D, performed in 2- to 4-week blocks of time, spread out throughout the PGY2 and PGY3 years.
  • Performance of at least 80 vaginal deliveries (including supervision of deliveries).
  • Provision of delivery and postpartum care for at least 5 continuity patients.
  • Completion of at least 4 weeks of additional outpatient specialty clinic rotations in obstetrics and maternal health care. Elective rotation options include additional time spent on L&D, as well as specialty rotations with OB emergency services, MFM, reproductive medicine, early pregnancy access clinic, maternal substance use clinic, CHC (FQHC) clinic, and an on-call delivery rotations with attendings, including with family medicine attendings who perform cesarean sections.
  • Completion of at least 1 scholarly work with a faculty member on an obstetric/maternity care topic (inclusive of a Grand Rounds presentation).
  • Participation in teaching at least 2 didactic presentations with a faculty member on obstetric/maternity care topics.
  • Participation as an instructor during June of PGY3 year in the ALSO course for incoming interns.
