Ultrasound Elective

EMER 7620 Ultrasound

The goal of this course is to become comfortable with performing point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in the emergency department. POCUS differs from comprehensive ultrasound as it is used to answer a specific clinical question (i.e. does this patient have a pneumothorax, gall stons, AAA, etc.) You schedule shifts for performing POCUS on patients in the emergency department in a self-directed manner, while also having weekly supervised scanning shifts with an attending/fellow and helping perform weekly QA.

Prerequisites

Must have third year clerkships completed. Career track in emergency medicine is not required for participation in the elective except from August-October.

Course Requirements

  • 4 week blocks
  • Complete 100 scans
  • Attend all scheduled shifts (you chose schedule for 12 four hour shifts)
  • Minimum of 10 ultrasound exams in each of the 6 major exam categories
  • Minimum of 70% on the following online tests:
    • Aorta
    • Biliary
    • Cardiac
    • DVT
    • FAST
    • Lung
    • Soft Tissue
    • OB/GY
    • Ocular
    • Physics 
    • Procedure
