Inspiring Hope: Row4ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare group of neurological diseases that mainly involves the nerve cells that are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. With ALS, these nerve cells progressively degenerate, leading to muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventually, paralysis. There is no cure for ALS, and the exact cause of the disease is still unknown.

The University of Utah’s ALS Clinic works diligently to further research the disease and support patients in all of its phases, with a multidisciplinary team of specialists that understand the challenges that come with an ALS diagnosis.

In support of the ALS Clinic, a local team of rowers dubbed Row4ALS has dedicated their voyages across entire oceans to raising awareness and funding. They also partner with 212 Fitness (an SLC-based gym) to hold rowing contests, from which proceeds are also donated to the clinic.

This May 24th, 212 Fitness, Bout Time Pub & Grub, and the Row4ALS team met with our clinic to present the donations they raised for ALS research–an amazing $37,600!

Attendees included Chief Inspiration Officer Alan Alderman from the Row4ALS Foundation; the 2023 rowing team, consisting of Tim Ryan (co-owner of Bout Time Pub and Grub), Dale Smith, and Abel Ryan; Josiah and Jamie Schultz (owners of 212 Fitness); and our very own Drs. Bromberg and Gibson!

“With this research, we can hope for a better life and hope for a cure,” said Alderman, who has been living with ALS for over twenty years.
