clinical training
Family planning fellows in our program are active generalist OB/GYN clinicians in settings that maximize exposure but minimize time expenditure. One great advantage to our programs are high patient volume.
clinical training sites
University of Utah Hospital and Clinics
The state of Utah currently has an 18-week gestational age restriction with exemptions for maternal or life-limiting fetal indications. The University of Utah is a tertiary referral center with high-risk care coordination and transfers from across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada. The Complex Family Planning Fellows actively serve as outpatient and inpatient consultants with the interdisciplinary teams.
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic is located in the outpatient OBGYN clinics and supports patients with time-sensitive assessment needs. The clinic offers procedure rooms, dedicated nursing, and moderate sedation capabilities.
Fellows, with faculty support, provide outpatient services in the Contraception for High Risk Patients (CHRP) Clinic. This service provides consultation and provision of contraception for patients with complex medical problems and those with complications associated with contraception.
Fellows participate as members of the general division within the department and supervise resident clinics and fulfill service as well as on-call obligations as the attending for inpatient services.
Planned Parenthood Association of Utah’s (PPAU)
Family planning fellows have many clinical training opportunities. Clinical abortion training up to 18 weeks occurs at the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah’s (PPAU) Metro Clinic. This center performs more than 2,000 medical and surgical terminations per year, is the only elective second trimester provider in the state, and is the local Ryan Residency Training site.
PPAU also provides preventive medical care and contraception to Utahns. This affiliate is Title X funded and supplies contraception to 30,000 clients each year.PPAU is also the state’s leading provider of affordable vasectomy services. All fellows are encouraged to obtain training in vasectomy at this site.
Intermountain Medical Center and Primary Children’s Hospital
Complex Family Planning Fellows have trainee privileges at additional training sites in the Salt Lake Valley. Both Intermountain Medical Center and Primary Children’s Hospital are large tertiary referral centers. Fellows work with dual-boarded Maternal Fetal Medicine/ Complex Family Planning physicians and Pediatric Adolescents Gynecology specialists, as well as OBGYN residents at these sites when Complex Family Planning specialty care is needed.
Away Rotations
In response to the gestational age restrictions in Utah, the University of Utah Complex Family Planning fellowship has partnered with other fellowship sites to support fellows in gaining increased clinical volume and complexity of cases. The fellowship directors will determine individual training needs and assess career goals with each fellow to determine the timing of these high-quality rotations with experts in complex family planning.
graduate education
The ACGME Requires Complex Family Planning Fellows to have or to complete a Masters degree in clinical science or Public Health. As an NIH-sponsored Center for Clinical and Translational Science the University of Utah offers a Master’s in Science of Clinical Investigation (MSCI).Complex Family Planning Fellows are encouraged to pursue this Master’s option where courses are taught by internationally recognized investigators.
The coursework is timed to accommodate clinical scheduling and supports fellowship trainees from programs across the OBGYN department and other specialties. The program consists of:
- Formal didactic coursework,
- a longitudinal seminar series,
- and a mentored clinical research projects.
