I spent three weeks at Groote Schuur in Cape Town working with several different teams in their hospital system. I was mainly focused on Trauma, but their system is set up in such a way that they only do trauma cases on a couple days of the week, hence I worked with the foot and ankle team, arthroplasty team, pediatrics, and spine team on various days of my time in Cape Town.
I scrubbed many cases, and specifically worked with several residents who were on rotations with trauma faculty. The exchange of ideas and techniques was very rewarding, and I had several discussions with registrars about them visiting us in Utah for a period of time. I was allowed to scrub, but did not lead any cases. I entirely assisted, and helped be a bouncing board for ideas when a consultant was not present.
During my time at GS, I wrote a paper with Dr. Held (who had visited the University of Utah as an ABC travelling fellow in the spring of 2018) analyzing the statistics of the viewership of a YouTube Channel that their orthopaedicdepartment has developed with medical student produced videos. I pulled and analyzed the data, revised a partially written paper, and developed all of the figures for the paper. It is currently under review by the other co-authors, and will be submitted.
