Welcome New Fellows - U of U School of Medicine

We are excited to welcome our new 2020 fellows! We currently have 8 fellows in our PM&R program. Our fellowship programs include: Spinal Cord Injury, Sports Medicine, Interventional spine & Musculoskeletal Medicine, Neuro Psych Post-Doctoral program, and Rehab Psych Post-Doctoral program. 

Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship

Andrea Aguirre, MD 

Dr. Aguirre completed a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where she served as a chief resident. Her clinical interests include acute and chronic care of SCI patients, spasticity management, and adaptive sports and recreation. Dr. Aguirre is originally from South Florida, and in her free time she enjoys running, hiking, watching UCLA athletics, and spending time with her dog. 

Interventional Spine & Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship

Taylor Burnham, DO

Dr. Burnham completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Utah, where he served as Chief resident. His areas of clinical and research interest include the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of acute and chronic neck and back problems; including disc herniations, spinal stenosis, zygapophyseal joint pain, sacroiliac joint pain, and other degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He is also enrolled in a Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI). He is originally from Alberta, Canada, and enjoys surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, and spending time with his wife and three children.

Adam Michalik, DO

Dr. Michalik completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York where he served as Chief Resident and was awarded the Sayeeda Zain Innovative Research award.  His areas of clinical interest include evaluation and treatment of non-surgical, degenerative spinal pathology such as: degenerative disc disease, disc herniations, radiculopathy/radicular pain, spinal stenosis, zygapophyseal (facet) joint pain, sacroiliac joint pain.  Dr. Michalik's research interests revolve around the efficacy of interventional spine procedures for the treatment of degenerative spinal pathology, patient reported outcomes and orthobiologics.  He is originally from Minnesota and enjoys hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his wife and two children.

Sports Medicine Fellowship

Mark Sederberg, DO

Dr. Sederberg completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.  He is originally from Utah and completed undergraduate at Brigham Young University, majoring in Exercise Science. He graduated with honors from medical school at the University of North Texas. Dr. Sederberg's clinical and research interests include diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, tendinopathy, and exercise as medicine. He enjoys just about any sport, especially running and tennis, and is excited to return to Utah and help his kids learn to ski in its beautiful mountains.

Ryan Dunn, DO

Dr. Dunn completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he served as chief resident. Dr. Dunn’s clinical interests include diagnostic and therapeutic musculoskeletal ultrasound, fluoroscopic spine procedures, electromyography, acute musculoskeletal injuries, injury prevention, and working with both high-level and recreational athletes in order to keep them healthy and active. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, cycling, hiking, camping, and spending time with his family.

Neuro Psych Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Natalie Kurniadi, PhD

Dr. Kurniadi is currently a second-year clinical neuropsychology fellow at the University of Utah Craig Nielsen Rehabilitation Hospital. Her primary clinical interests include neurodegenerative conditions, movement disorders, capacity assessments, and conducting candidacy evaluations for deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery. Her research has examined the longitudinal relationships between affect, cognition, and movement symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, ecologically valid measures of executive function in older adults, inhibitory control deficits in binge eating, and the neurocognitive profiles of individuals remitted from anorexia and bulimia nervosa. She is originally from San Diego, California, and enjoys hiking, traveling, and all things French.

Dr. Lopez completed his internship at the VA Central Iowa in Des Moines, where he worked in the Neuropsychology Consult Clinic and the domiciliary. His areas of clinical and research interest include performance validity testing, mild neurocognitive impairment, and researching electronic administration of cognitive assessments. He is originally from Madison, Wisconsin and enjoys running, cycling, swimming, playing music, and racing in various endurance sports. He also enjoys wearing a scarf on occasion, even in hot weather. 

 

Rehab Psych Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Madison Niermeyer, PhD

Dr. Niermeyer completed her graduate training at the University of Utah and her predoctoral internship at the Brown Alpert Medical School. Her clinical work and research aim to promote quality of life among individuals living with various types neurologic illness and injury, such as by understanding intersections between cognitive and emotional functioning. She is originally from SLC, Utah and was grateful to be able to return home for her fellowship in rehabilitation psychology after living on the east coast for internship. In her spare time, she enjoys mountain biking, skiing, and whitewater kayaking with her husband and friends.
