Why Utah?
First, the proximity to nature. If you need to escape to nature, you can do so and be back in time for work. Second, the culture of the residency. It seemed during my interview that the folks I met were right balance of open-minded, hard-working, and welcoming. That's turned out to be 100% true. Third, the program has a sense of momentum. Unlike some of the legacy programs I interviewed at, which were like huge ships that are steady but difficult to turn, the U of Utah seemed more like a smaller, more agile ship. Things are evolving in real time. Access to unique research opportunities is more attainable because there is a culture of excitement to launch innovative projects (and the funding to make them happen), and faculty are genuinely excited to collaborate with residents. In brief, the University of Utah's psych program is for those who are excited by the opportunity to help shape the future of a program.
