Welcome Dr. Andrea M. Steely

Welcome Andrea M. Steely, MD

Andrea M. Steely, MD, is an adult cardiac surgeon specializing in multiple arterial coronary revascularization, valve repair, and replacement. She is also interested in native valve preservation as well as elective and emergent open and hybrid aortic procedures, including arch reconstruction and complex endovascular procedures. She is an assistant professor of surgery and is an active member of the multi-disciplinary Aortic Disease Program at University of Utah Health.

Dr. Steely's clinical specialties include:

  • Adult cardiac surgery
  • Aortic aneurysm surgery
  • Minimally invasive aortic valve surgery
  • Thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair
  • Aortic dissection
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Transcatheter aortic valve surgery
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • MAZE procedure for atrial fibrillation

After receiving her MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Dr. Steely stayed and completed her general surgery residency training at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Following residency, she completed a thoracic surgery fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She then practiced Adult Cardiac Surgery in Los Angeles for almost two years before spending a year at the Cleveland Clinic to pursue her true passion and gain additional training and experience in complex aortic surgery with experts in the field.

Dr. Steely was fortunate to meet and work with the founder of Team Heart, an organization started almost two decades ago to create sustainable cardiac surgical care in Rwanda. During her thoracic surgery fellowship, she was selected to receive a Thoracic Surgery Foundation scholarship to travel back to Rwanda with Team Heart; you can view a video about her experience filmed on-site in Rwanda by Edwards Lifescineces - one of the world's largest manufacturer's of heart valves.

Dr. Steely's goal is to help patients return to a meaningful life. This may translate into alleviating acute and/or chronic chest discomfort/shortness of breath due to coronary artery or cardiac valve disease or repairing the aorta, including the root, arch, and its branches. She works closely with her vascular surgery colleagues to be innovative and creative to come up with an individualized solution for each patient's unique anatomy and pathology. She also aims to be a resource for those patients with heritable congenital aortic valve disease, connective tissue disorders, and aortic pathology that affects not only themselves but also their families.

In her free time, Dr. Steely enjoys nearly any outdoor activity, including hiking, biking, running, playing tennis, cross-country skiing, traveling, and cooking delicious healthy food. She is also an artist and enjoys both drawing and painting in her spare time.
