We have three different rotations in which medical students are welcome to participate.  After applying formally through the Student Affairs office, we will finalize the start date based on available rotations and your schedule requirements. Schedule requests will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis and University of Utah student schedule requests are handled before applications from external students.

Research Preceptorship (SURG 7370) – This a research rotation for medical students of any year from University of Utah or other LCME-accredited institutions.  Students engage in full-time research in the field of otolaryngology under the direction of an established faculty mentor. They are not limited to choice of research project and are welcome to either participate in ongoing research in the department or in a clinical or basic science project of their own design approved and supervised by their mentor.  Students can earn credits toward graduation based on their research effort and year.

MS3 clerkship rotation (SURG 7335) – This is a 2-week clinical rotation for University of Utah MS3s to get an in-depth understanding of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery as a specialty.

MS4 clerkship rotation (SURG 7340) – This is a one-month clinical rotation on the Otolaryngology-HNS service intended for MS4s from University of Utah or other LCME-accredited institutions.  Students will be assigned to spend four weeks with one of our three clinical service teams: GOLD (general, otology, rhinology, facial plastics, laryngology); SILVER (head and neck surgery); PCH (pediatric otolaryngology).

These are both busy clinical rotations designed to immerse the medical student in various aspects of the Otolaryngology service and didactic activities (90% clinic/OR and 10% didactic).  These courses will provide continued learning in the specialty with basic knowledge and skills development in the areas of history taking, physical exam, clinical reasoning, procedures, and foundational pathophysiology for core diagnoses and presentations in this specialty.

Visiting MS4 students interested in applying for the SURG 7340 clerkship rotation are encouraged to apply through VSAS. More information for visiting students and the application process can be found on the School of Medicine page.  For any additional questions, please contact our medical student coordinator, DeAnn Barfuss at deann.barfuss@hsc.utah.edu, or the course catalog under these rotation headings (SURG 7335, 7340, 7370).
