Role of the Student in this Course

Clinical Experience

It will be the student’s responsibility to contact the involved faculty and arrange for days to be involved in either the operating room or the clinics (total of 8 half days). During clinic days, they will be expected to retrieve and review pertinent clinical information from the electronic medical records, and depending on the expectations of the specific preceptor, they will either see the patient independently or together with the resident or preceptor. The student may enter orders, notes, and any prescription medications (with oversight). During operating room days, the student will review the patient information prior to the surgery and will be present before the surgery to observe markings and pre-operative consent.  The student will be scrubbed in during the surgery and assist as able.

Clinical faculty include

Cori Agarwal, MD (plastic surgery 801-581-7719), Isak Goodwin, MD (plastic surgery 801-581-7719), Joanne Rolls PA-C (family medicine 801-581-2000), Erika Sullivan, MD (family medicine 801-581-2000), Nikki Mihalopoulos, MD (adolescent medicine 801-213-3599).

Community Exposure:

The student will seek out learning opportunities though the LGBT resource center (contact lgbtrc@sa.utah.edu), including gender and sexuality workshops, and provider panels. Additional community opportunities throughout the year include the annual Genderevolution Conference (in the Fall through The Pride Center), the Transgender Provider Summit (annually through U of U), the annual transgender and HIV PrEP CME conference (in April) and the Pride Festival support booth (through the Dept of Family and Preventive Medicine). Finally, students are required to produce a research project of some kind (i.e. Scope Radio piece, poster presentation, educational materials etc, for Scope Radio contact Kirtly Jones (kirtly.jones@hsc.utah.edu) and Scot Singpiel (scot.singpiel@hsc.utah.edu)).
