Rowing Together in Aid of Local ALS Clinic

This May, a Salt Lake City gym, a nonprofit organization, and a university hospital teamed up to host the eighth annual Rowathon—an athletic challenge and fundraiser in support of local ALS care and research.

Held at 212 Fitness, the event brought together teams of rowers for a high-intensity competition. Each team had just 30 minutes to complete the following:

  • Max meter row
  • 200-yard suitcase carries per person
  • 50 split squats per leg per person
  • 50 push-ups per person
  • 50 four-way deadbugs per person

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a nervous system disease that breaks down nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, stopping the brain from being able to control muscles. There is currently no cure, and treatment methods revolve around managing symptoms and improving quality of life. University of Utah Health’s ALS Clinic brings this care to the Mountain West and continues to research the disease.

This year, the Rowathon raised over $4,950, with 100% of those donations going to our ALS clinic. Here are the highlights:

  • Participants: 89
  • Teams: 19
  • Total meters rowed: 117,937
  • Split squats: 8,800
  • Push-ups: 4,400
  • Deadbugs: 4,400
  • Top team meters rowed: 7,462

This week, the ALS Clinic received the check from the Rowathon, totaling more than $4,950. All funds will directly support patient care and research.

Events like this show how much can be accomplished when people come together for a cause. Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, or supported the event. We look forward to doing it again next year.
