Upcoming Events

February 2024: Immigration, Work, and Health: The Impact of Policy on the Experiences of Asian Americans. On Friday, February 21st at 12:00 PM MST, join U-POWER for an exploration of how the past impacts the present. Many immigrants new to the United States encounter complex policies that restrict the types of work they can do, leading to markedly different experiences among different groups. Asian-American immigrant experiences were shaped by legislation like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and, much later, the Vietnam War. These laws and other historical factors have led to Asian Americans being overrepresented in both white-collar jobs in technology and medicine as well as blue-collar jobs like nail salon work. In this talk, Dr. Bailey Martin-Giacalone will explore how work shapes the immigration of Asian people to the United States and how immigration policies influence the work that Asian Americans perform today. She will also discuss how these two factors may contribute to the health experiences among Asian Americans. Her talk will conclude with a conversation about how we can increase worker power for workers across groups and create a stronger labor market. Register today for Zoom meeting information.

March 2024: Research Pilot Project Awardees. Join U-POWER for a look at three newly funded pilot projects. One project is examining the frequency and degree of agricultural labor violations alongside how these have been reported upon by the news media, while another is looking at challenges to well-being of family caregivers. A third project will build atop previous work to investigate commercial bus driver sleep regularity, well-being, and the influence of their schedules. Register today for Zoom meeting information.
