Knee pain and degeneration 2

Fig b: Osteoarthritis. Patellofemoral compartment joint space narrowing with osteophytosis.

Osteoarthritis of the knee joint often asymmetrically involves the medial, lateral, and/or patellofemoral compartments.

Common features include:

  • Asymmetric joint space narrowing.
    • Degenerative malalignment (genu varus/valgus alignment, subluxation)
  • Osteophyte formation (productive)
  • Subchondral cystic change and sclerosis
  • Chondrocalcinosis
