Robotic Cardiac Surgery: Only in Mountain West

ROBOTIC CARDIAC SURGERY

University of Utah Health is the only center in the Mountain West region to use the da Vinci Robot for cardiac surgery. Robotic surgery provides a number of advantages to traditional approaches including:

  • Coronary artery bypass,
  • Mitral valve repair,
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Other conditions requiring cardiac surgery.

Robotic surgery techniques promote excellent outcomes including dramatically reducing post-surgical complications such as infections, blood loss, and scarring. It requires much shorter hospital stays and supports a faster return to normal day-to-day activities. Patients undergoing minimally invasive approaches also require less use of opioids for post-operative pain control.

Robotic heart surgery has excellent success rates when compared with any other approach, and robotic valve repair for degenerative mitral valve disease has a high success rate.

Vikas Sharma, MD, Director of the Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program at the University of Utah Hospital, is available to answer any questions about this surgical approach.

The Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program is also a designated Destination Care Program. The Destination Care Program is an initiative by U of U Health focusing on care for our out-of-state patients.
