The University of Utah's Department of Surgery offers a funded 2-year Surgical Education Research Fellowship (SERF) program.
Program Goals
Through participation in the University of Utah Surgical Education Research Fellowship, fellows will:
- Gain the knowledge and skills to lead rigorous surgical education research, investigating and answering important questions that advance the science of surgical education. Fellows will have direct experience with:
- IRB preparation and submission
- Grant writing
- Research study design
- Abstract preparation
- Oral and poster presentation skills
- Manuscript preparation and submission
- Serve as a reviewer for surgical education journals, such as Annals of Surgery Open – Education, and Global Surgical Education
- Advance their knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding the core elements of surgical education including:
- Curriculum Development
- Instructional Methods
- Learner Assessment
- Program Evaluation
- Educational research (qualitative and quantitative)
- Program Administration (residency, clerkship, simulation, etc.)
- Faculty development
- Interprofessional education
- Expand their local, regional, and national network of medical educators through participation in:
- University of Utah- Masters of Education of Health Professions
- ASE/APDS Surgical Education Week and ASE Committees
- Collaborative workshops and meetings with University of Michigan CSTAR
- ACS/AEI consortium meetings and postgraduate courses
- Have opportunities to enhance their clinical teaching skills
- General Surgery Intern Orientation
- MS3 Clerkship Orientation
- MS4 Transition to Internship Course (skills sessions)
- Surgery Interest Group events
- Surgical Exploration and Discovery (SEAD) program
