Overview

To be eligible for the Surgical Education Research Fellowship (SERF) program, an applicant must have completed at least two years of an ACGME-accredited surgical residency program (including, but not limited to, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Urology).

Required Information 

  • A current curriculum vitae (CV).
  • A statement of interest specifically defining career goals, plan to achieve these goals, and the anticipated impact from participating in the fellowship program.
  • A letter of support from the trainee's Program Director or another appropriate authority within the institution endorsing the applicant and confirming the eligibility of the applicant to enter into the fellowship program.

Applicants should submit application materials to the Fellowship Manager, Nancy Nelson, at nancy.nelson@hsc.utah.edu no later than September 1st of the year prior to their anticipated start date.

Master of Health Professions Education Program

Upon acceptance into the University of Utah's Surgical Education Research Fellowship, candidates will work with the Fellowship Director to apply to the University of Illinois at Chicago's (UIC) Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program no later than December 1st of the year prior to their anticipated start date or in accordance with the current admission calendar for the UIC program.

The MHPE program is fully funded by the University of Utah's Department of Surgery's Office of Surgical Education and will be completed in tandem with the fellowship.
