Catching up with D Millar, MD
It feels like just yesterday that many of us were sitting together at the country club in 2013, celebrating residency graduation, surrounded by mentors and friends. I cherished my decade at the University of Utah, which began with medical school in 2003. What an amazing place it was, filled with incredible people, a rich history, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
I have such fond memories of late nights in the call room with resident colleagues, long, meticulous cases with master surgeons, and larger-than-life personalities. I’m deeply grateful for the senior residents who served as mentors and friends, showing us what was possible. I’m also thankful for the faculty, who guided us with their teaching, hand-holding, and eventual trust. You all made us better.
My wife and best friend, Camilla, has been an absolute rock for our family. We started residency with three children, and some may remember that in 2009, our fourth child, Reed, was born unexpectedly at home due to precipitous labor, while I was still operating. Camilla handled that with incredible grace and composure.
After graduating, I completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Cincinnati in 2014. I then joined the faculty there, spending seven years deeply immersed in the world of violence, trauma, high volume emergency general surgery, and academic excellence. My family and I loved our time in Ohio and treasure the friendships and memories we built during those years.
In 2021, I joined Utah Surgical Associates in Utah County, where I currently serve as the trauma medical director at Utah Valley Hospital. While moving south of the "Point of the Mountain" seemed almost unfathomable for some, I’ve embraced this fantastic community and love living in this vibrant college town. My practice is a broad spectrum of trauma, critical care, acute care general surgery, and a fair amount of administration.
Our twins will graduate from BYU in 2025. One of them has been a collegiate gymnast at BYU for the past four years, is now married, and is preparing to attend PA school while her husband completes dental school. Her twin brother is applying to medical school here shortly. Our two younger boys are thriving with one graduating 2025 and the other 2027. We're almost empty nesters.
I will forever cherish my memories of training at the University of Utah
