ADVOCACY TRAINING PATHWAY

Level I (Undergraduate Students)

A Level I Advocacy Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Undergraduate students interested in global surgery advocacy, to include campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level.

The Experience

Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)

Expected Output

Complete a small internal advocacy project
- Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include:

University of Utah Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR)

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
- UROP provides a $1,200 stipend and educational programming for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project of their own under the supervision of a faculty member.
Travel and Small Grants
- Level I Advocacy Scholars may also apply for a travel or small grant from the OUR.

NOTE: This source of funding is only available to current University of Utah undergraduate students.

Level II (Medical/Graduate Students)

Position Overview

A Level II Advocacy Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Medical and graduate students interested in global surgery advocacy, to include campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level.

The Experience

Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc.
Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)

Expected Output

Implement an advocacy project
- Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
- Submit abstract to regional meeting
- Encouraged to publish results
Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

Presentation at a local or regional conference

NOTE: This source of funding is not guaranteed/routinely available for those outside of the University of Utah.

Level III (Physicians/Surgeons)

Position Overview

A Level III Advocacy Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Surgical residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons interested in global surgery advocacy, to include campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level.

The Experience

Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc.
Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
Spend 2-4 weeks at a surgical site in an LMIC
Supervise and mentor Level I and Level II Advocacy Scholars
Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)

Expected Output

Implement an advocacy project
- Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
- Submit abstract to national meeting
- Encouraged to publish results
Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

If applying for the Level III track, copies of MD/DO and any other relevant graduate-level diplomas/licensure
If applying for the Level III track, two letters of reference, including letter of good standing in current residency program from Program Director or Chair (if applicable)
