Education and Training Pathway

EDUCATION AND TRAINING PATHWAY

Overview

The Education and Training Pathway is a comprehensive program designed to equip healthcare professionals and educators with the skills, knowledge, and tools to effectively train and mentor the next generation of global surgeons and healthcare providers. Through a combination of innovative pedagogical approaches, practical experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop the expertise to create impactful educational programs, enhance surgical skills training, and foster sustainable capacity building.

Those interested in global surgery education and/or training, to include curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, program management, etc., are encouraged to apply to our Education and Training Pathway.

Level I (Undergraduate Students)

    A Level I Education and Training Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Undergraduate students interested in global surgery education and/or training, to include curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, program management, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level. 

    • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
    • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
    • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on educational technology, surgical education, etc. 
    • Complete a small internal education or training project
      • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

    Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

    University of Utah Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR)

    • Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
      • UROP provides a $1,200 stipend and educational programming for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project of their own under the supervision of a faculty member. 
    • Travel and Small Grants
      • Level I Education and Training Scholars may also apply for a travel or small grant from the OUR.

    NOTE: This source of funding is only available to current University of Utah undergraduate students. 

    Level II (Medical/Graduate Students)

      A Level II Education and Training Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Medical and graduate students interested in global surgery education and/or training, to include curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, program management, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level. 

      • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
      • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
      • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
      • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on educational technology, surgical education, etc. 
      • Co-manage monthly journal club
      • Implement an education or training project addressing a clinical or process-oriented need
        • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meeting
        • Submit abstract to local or regional meeting
        • Encouraged to publish results
      • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

      Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

      University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

      • (If available) international travel and lodging
      • Presentation at a local or regional conference

      NOTE: This source of funding is not guaranteed/routinely available for those outside of the University of Utah. 

      Level III (Physicians/Surgeons)

        A Level III Education and Training Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Surgical residents, fellows, practicing surgeons, and education specialists interested in global surgery education and/or training, to include curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, program management, etc., are encouraged to apply for this level.

        • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
        • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
        • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on educational technology, surgical education, etc. 
        • Co-manage monthly journal club
        • Potentially spend 2-4 weeks at a surgical site in an LMIC 
        • Supervise and mentor Level I and Level II Education and Training Scholars
        • Implement an education or training project addressing a clinical or process-oriented need
          • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
          • Submit abstract to local or regional meeting
          • Encouraged to publish results
        • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

        Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

        University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

        • (If available) international travel and lodging
        • Presentation at a national conference

        NOTE: This source of funding is not guaranteed/routinely available for those outside of the University of Utah.

        2. Personal Statement addressing commitment to global surgery, why you selected the pathway you did, and how you will benefit from the program (500 words)
        3. Current Curriculum Vitae (tailored toward global surgery activities)
        4. If applying for the Level III track, copies of MD/DO and any other relevant graduate-level diplomas/licensure
        5. If applying for the Level III track, two letters of reference, including letter of good standing in current residency program from Program Director or Chair (if applicable)
