Innovation and Technology Pathway

INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY TRAINING PATHWAY

Level I (Undergraduate Students)

    A Level I Innovation and Technology Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Undergraduate students, especially those with a background in engineering, interested in global surgery innovation and technology are encouraged to apply for this level.

    • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
    • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
    • Complete a small internal innovation or technology project
      • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

    Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

    University of Utah Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR)

    • Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
      • UROP provides a $1,200 stipend and educational programming for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project of their own under the supervision of a faculty member. 
    • Travel and Small Grants
      • Level I Education and Training Scholars may also apply for a travel or small grant from the OUR.

    NOTE: This source of funding is only available to current University of Utah undergraduate students. 

    Global Innovation Fund

    • Once an innovation or technology project has been determined, the CGS, in partnership with the Scholar, may apply to the Global Innovation Fund (GIF) for funding if the project:
      • Is focused on the poor,
      • Employs novel approaches which are not commonplace,
      • Can improve upon alternative solutions,
      • Is backed by evidence of potential impact, 
      • Can be widely applied in many different settings,
      • Has the potential to scale to reach millions of people,
      • Is led by a strong and dynamic team,
      • Is ready for investment,
      • Will generate new knowledge on what works, and/or
      • Has a clear role for the GIF. 

    Level II (Medical/Graduate Students)

      A Level II Innovation and Technology Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Medical and graduate students, especially those with a background in engineering, interested in global surgery innovation and technology are encouraged to apply for this level. 

      • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
      • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
      • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
      • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on surgical innovation, surgical technology, etc. 
      • Implement an innovation or technology project
        • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Submit abstract to local or regional meeting
        • Encouraged to publish results
      • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

      Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

      University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

      • (If available) international travel and lodging
      • Presentation at a local or regional conference

      NOTE: This source of funding is not guaranteed/routinely available for those outside of the University of Utah. 

      Global Innovation Fund

      • Once an innovation or technology project has been determined, the CGS, in partnership with the Scholar, may apply to the Global Innovation Fund (GIF) for funding if the project:

      Level III (Physicians/Surgeons)

        A Level III Innovation and Technology Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Surgical residents, fellows, practicing surgeons, and engineering specialists interested in global surgery innovation and technology are encouraged to apply for this level. 

        • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
        • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
        • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on surgical innovation, surgical technology, etc. 
        • Spend 2-4 weeks at a surgical site in an LMIC
        • Supervise and mentor Level I and Level II Innovation and Technology Scholars 
        • Implement an innovation or technology project
          • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
          • Submit abstract to national meeting
          • Encouraged to publish results
        • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

        University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

        • (If available) international travel and lodging
        • Presentation at a national conference

        2. Personal Statement addressing commitment to global surgery, why you selected the pathway you did, and how you will benefit from the program (500 words)
        3. Current Curriculum Vitae (tailored toward global surgery activities)
        4. If applying for the Level III track, copies of MD/DO and any other relevant graduate-level diplomas/licensure
        5. If applying for the Level III track, two letters of reference, including letter of good standing in current residency program from Program Director or Chair (if applicable)
