The Tonna Research Lab focuses on improving the care of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. The group examines the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) / extracorporeal life support for cardiopulmonary failure, including the appropriate use of adjunctive therapies such as mechanical ventilation and physical therapy, and the cost effectiveness of using ECMO for cardiopulmonary failure.
Other research includes the role of sleep during critical illness and the effect of the environment on sleep and recovery from critical illness.
