International Students Receive Scholarships

Two of our international students – Kebba Kah (PhD student) and Ghazaleh Safazadeh (MPH student) received community engagement scholarships from the U's International Student Scholar Services (ISSS) office in August 2020. The scholarships are for $4,000 each. Their applications were strong, not only because of their academic achievement, but also due to their contribution to combating coronavirus by serving the contact tracing effort. They both work for Sharon Talboys, PhD, MPH on the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) project to recruit, deploy, and train contact tracers. Kebba serves in the project management team and is the lead TA for 150 tracers. Ghazeleh serves as a contact tracer and has been recognized by UDOH for her high level of performance.

“The scholarship committee was impressed by your remarkable academic achievement, strong essay, and truly extensive community engagement,” reads the scholarship notification from the ISSS office. “We are proud to have high achieving students like you at the University of Utah!”

Of the honor, Kebba Kah noted, “ I am very appreciative and grateful to the U for according me the opportunity to be part of this amazing U family, and most especially to the Division of Public Health for the conducive environment that allows me to continue to realize my potentials both academically and in the community. For me, public health means community participation and engagement, as we assess communities to enable us provide sustainable evidence-based interventions. Thus, I have been blessed to be working with Dr. Talboys in her COVID-19 Surge Capacity Project with the UDOH, enabling me to apply my public health skills/competencies. Receiving this scholarship emboldened me to do more. Thanks to ISSS!"
