DFPM Sees High Rankings in the 2020 BRIMR Report

Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR), which ranks departments and Schools of Medicine across the country based on how much training and research funding money they receive from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), released its rankings for 2020 last week. Thanks to the tireless work of our research teams and individual researchers, the department and DFPM faculty divisions and researchers once again feature prominently in this year's rankings.

Under the Family Medicine category, DFPM is listed as bringing in $7,534,563 from the NIH, ranking #2 among the 47 Family Medicine departments listed in the report. Our department is second only to University of California San Diego in total amount granted.

DFPM Faculty were also listed in the report, most notably Joseph Stanford, MD, MSPH, who ranked 2nd among researchers in the Family Medicine category. Other high-ranking researchers in the category include Kelly Baron, PhD, MPH, DSBM, who ranked 10th, and Department Chair Kola Okuyemi, MD, MPH, who ranked 15th.

"Kudos to our faculty and staff," said Dr. Okuyemi in response to the news. "We increased actual money received by $1.6 million from last year and have 8 faculty listed, which may be an all-time record."

“Our preeminent BRIMR ranking is the tip of a larger iceberg of funding and scholarly activity that continues to grow in our department, in all divisions, and in collaborations within and outside the department," added Dr. Stanford. "I want to thank the many faculty and staff who contribute to all of our continued scholarly achievements."

Other faculty listed in the rankings were Sunday Azagba, PhD, Mia Hashibe, PhD, Fares Qeadan, PhD, Charles R. Rogers, PhD, MS, MPH, MCHES®, and Karen Schliep, PhD, MSPH.
