Program Director Message: A Season of Optimism

Greetings from the University of Utah PA program!

It is early April as I write this. This week, I walked outside of my house and noticed the first of many crocus flowers beginning to blossom in the front yard. It reminded me that days are getting longer and warmer, leaves will soon be back on the trees and winter is concluding. It also reminded me that we have been living in a pandemic for over a year now. These signs of spring in part represent my hope that 2021 brings a brighter outlook, more ability to connect, more social justice and less cause for mourning, social distancing and disruption of daily life.

Despite all the challenges of this worldwide pandemic, there have been some remarkable things happening around the program. Students continue to excel in the classroom and the clinic. The student run clinics in Salt Lake and St. George are open and thriving, and our students have been involved in providing COVID-19 vaccinations to underserved populations. Faculty are being recognized for their achievements at both the University and nationally. We have recently awarded nearly 30 scholarships or stipends to current students, which is unprecedented in the history of the program. These opportunities have grown a rapid rate over the last two years, because of the generosity of faculty, graduates and community benefactors. The research and grant procurement skills of our faculty and staff have also benefited students in multiple ways, including support for clinical site travel and a training focus on underserved and rural communities, which directly benefit the communities these students are assigned to.

We are looking forward to community outreach and we are looking forward to class 52 joining us in just a few weeks. This class is the most diverse class in the history of our program, and we look forward to a rich tapestry of human experience that these new students represent.

We have had two distinguished and long serving faculty members retire in the last year. Dan Crouse, MPAS, PA-C and Constance Goldgar, MS, PA-C have served the program with excellence for many years. Their contributions to the program and profession are monumental. We will miss them. We look forward to having three new faculty members join us in the near future and look forward to introducing them, I am certain they will create a legacy of excellence of their own.

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome” Anne Bradstreet

I hope a pleasant spring for each of you, and much prosperity in the coming seasons.
