It has been a busy spring for public health assistant professor Charles R. Rogers, PhD, MPH, MS, MCHES®, marked by University and national recognition for his scholarship and leadership. Recently, he was invited to the 21st Annual Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials. The highly competitive Summer Institute provides an intermediate/advanced course in planning, designing, and conducting high-impact randomized controlled trials of health-related behavioral interventions. It also emphasizes programmatic research, while supporting Dr. Rogers’ long-term career goal of employing and evaluating culture-specific interventions to eliminate cancer disparities among African-American men and vulnerable populations.
In addition to this distinction, Dr. Rogers was also invited to serve as a standing member for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Subcommittee J, which looks at career development of the NCI Initial Review Group.
“Your membership on a peer review committee represents a unique opportunity to participate in the review of grant applications submitted to the NCI. Committees make recommendations to the National Cancer Advisory Board and survey the status of research in their respective fields of science. While membership on a committee also requires a considerable commitment of professional time and energy, the evaluative functions performed by committee members are of great value to the support and advancement of biomedical and allied research,” reads the invitation letter, sent by Paulette S. Gray, PhD, Director of the Division of Extramural Activities at the NCI. “You have been appointed as a member because of your demonstrated competence and achievement in your scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of your research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors. Service on a review committee also requires mature judgement and objectivity, as well as the capacity to work effectively in a group—qualities we believe you will bring to this important task.”
Dr. Rogers’ term on the subcommittee begins July 1, 2021 and will end June 30, 2025.
