Ghana Learning Abroad Report

by Scott Benson, MD, PhD, MPH

Our Ghana learning abroad program has returned home safely. We had 16 students who participated with a team of 20 community health nurses from the Atwima Nwabiagya north District in Ghana. We collected COVID antibody tests on 300 study participants and surveyed 600 individuals in the district on their Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices regarding COVID. The preliminary findings were presented at a dissemination meeting held at the District Hall. The meeting was attended by district health officials, and the Regional director for all of the Asante region as well as community members and cultural leadership. The dissemination meeting and subsequent individual interviews were broadcast on one of the national television stations across Ghana. Currently, the Asante regional health directorate, and the district health directorate are looking to continue the work started in the Atwima Nwabiagya north district. We are already planning on collaborative project between the health directorates, local community members and cultural leadership for next year.
