UPAP Presents White Coats to Class 55

White Coats 55

The University of Utah’s Physician Assistant Program’s (UPAP) Class 55 received their white coats on May 6, 2024. Faculty, staff, and supporters gathered at the University Guest House to witness the first-year physician assistant students participate in the annual White Coat and Stethoscope Ceremony.

Sixty-nine matriculated students participated in the ceremony intended to remind students of their obligation and responsibility, and to always remain patient-centered in their education, skill acquisition, and professional development.

Attendees and students heard several speakers who imparted words of wisdom: Jared Spackman, MPAS, PA-C, Program Director; Jo Rolls, MEHP, MPAS, PA-C, Director of Didactic Education; Melanie Murphy, PA-C, MBA, Director of Clinical Education; Leigh Elrod, DPAS, MPAS, PA-C, Chief of Division of Physician Assistant Studies; and Dr. Sam Finlayson, MD, MPH, MBA, Interim Dean of Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to feel the gravity of their chosen profession. It is also an excellent opportunity for family and friends to recognize the achievement associated with matriculating into a highly ranked and competitive program,” said Spackman.

The afternoon concluded with the newly coated students reciting the Physician Assistant Professional Oath, a statement of a physician assistant’s purpose and dedication.
