Kimberly Mangrum, a second-year PhD student in the Division of Public Health, has been honored with an award from the American Public Health Association (APHA). This recognition includes a $500 grant to support her attendance at APHA’s Annual Meeting, held from October 27-30 in Minneapolis, MN.
Mangrum’s award-winning abstract, titled “What Women in Ghana Tell Us About Breast Cancer: Exploring the Overlap Among Explanations,” received the highest scores from student and early faculty reviewers. The research presentation highlights the challenges of educating communities about breast cancer screening and treatment, particularly where medical and cultural attitudes may conflict. Mangrum’s work identifies key areas for reducing the burden of breast cancer in Ghana through culturally sensitive and effective strategies.
Several researchers from the division contributed to Mangrum’s abstract, including Dr. Scott Benson, Dr. Lisa Gren, and social work professor Dr. Caren Frost, who is a regular collaborator with Public Health researchers.
