John Barrett Named to AMGA Board of Directors

John Barrett, MD, family medicine physician and interim chair of the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine (DFPM), has been named to the Board of Directors of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA), a prominent national trade organization. His appointment, announced yesterday, is part of the addition of five new board members, with their tenure beginning this month.

In response to his appointment, Dr. Barrett expressed his commitment to transforming healthcare across the nation. “I look forward to representing University of Utah Health on the AMGA Board,” he said. "Together, we will work to further the mission of AMGA and promote a better healthcare system in the United States.”

AMGA is a leading advocate for medical groups and integrated healthcare systems, focusing on education, innovation, and empowering its members to deliver high-quality, value-based care. More than 175,000 physicians practice in AMGA’s member organizations, delivering care to one in three Americans.

The AMGA Board of Directors is comprised of healthcare leaders dedicated to shaping the future of American healthcare, ensuring high-quality care.

Dr. Barrett brings a wealth of experience to his new role, working extensively with rural populations over the years and receiving several awards, including the U.S. Public Health Service Achievement Medal. Previously serving as the executive medical director of the Community Physicians Group, he led the expansion of services to over 500,000 patients annually and established urgent care centers across nine community clinics.

Dr. Barrett graduated medical school from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed residency training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO. Currently, his areas of focus include health equity and the transition to value-based care.
