Laura E. Moreno Receives Early Career Educator Award in Health Sciences

Laura (Eli) Moreno, MD, assistant professor for the Division of Family & Community Medicine, has received the 2025 Early Career Educator Award in Health Sciences from the University of Utah Health Academy of Health Science Educators (AHSE).

The award was established to recognize educators for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to fostering a culture of exceptional education.

“My goal as an educator and mentor is to build representation in academic healthcare,” said Moreno. “I believe it’s important to amplify the voices of minority and marginalized groups. This award gives me the platform to highlight this work.”

With a reputation for innovative teaching methods and personalized mentorship, her leadership has led to improved academic performance and professional readiness among family medicine residents.

“Leading by example, Dr. Moreno embodies the qualities of an exemplary educator and mentor,” said Assistant Professor Saskia Spiess, MD. “Her professionalism, integrity, and passion for educating residents inspire learners to strive for excellence.”

The tangible outcomes of Dr. Moreno’s efforts are evident in the achievements of her mentees. Many have gone on to excel in their careers, attributing their success to the solid foundation and mentorship she provides.

Dr. Moreno expressed gratitude to her colleagues for dedicating their time to nominate her for this award, acknowledging that many deserving educators lack the same level of support.

“There are so many educators dedicated to training our healthcare professionals to reach their full potential,” she said. “They deserve this award as well because we’re in this together and our goal is the same.”

Dr. Moreno will be formally recognized at the Academy of Health Science Educators Induction Ceremony on April 14, 2025.
