Family & Community Medicine Hosts 5th Annual Dr. Sarah Hawley Memorial Lecture

On March 12, 2025, the Division of Family & Community Medicine hosted the 5th annual Dr. Sarah Hawley Memorial Lecture. The annual lecture commemorates and celebrates the life and interests of Sarah Hawley, MD, a gifted and compassionate Family Medicine resident.

Dr. Hawley was known for her passion for a variety of medical disciplines, including women’s health, pediatrics, and wilderness medicine. Outside of medicine, she was known for her love of adventure and desire to connect people.

“Sarah was a person who embodied warmth and connection, who cared selflessly for others. When you were with Sarah, you knew that you were truly cared about. Sarah’s infectious energy and enthusiasm lifted the spirits of those around her,” said Associate Professor Brian Vukelic, MD.

To honor Dr. Hawley’s memory, this year’s lecture focused on her clinical interest in women’s health. Camille Moreno, DO, medical director of the University of Utah’s Midlife Women’s Health & Menopausal Medicine Program, presented “Essentials of Symptomatic Menopause Management for the Primary Care Clinician: A Care-Based Approach.” Dr. Moreno specializes in treating patients experiencing perimenopause, menopause, and related conditions.

During the lecture, she provided attendees with valuable clinical insights and real-world cases from her practice. Dr. Moreno discussed key topics such as counseling patients on both evidence-based hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options, identifying high-risk individuals who may not be suitable for menopausal hormone therapy, and exploring new treatment options for managing perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms.
