The Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine offers a CPEP-accredited Medical Microbiology Fellowship training program, which has been in existence since 1978. During the two-year program, the trainee gains firsthand experience in bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, molecular microbiology, serology, and infectious disease histopathology, through a series of structured bench rotations, didactic and laboratory rounds-based teaching, and independent research. The trainee also acquires administrative experience through participation in laboratory management and hospital committee meetings. CPEP fellows also gain clinical experience in the hospital setting by joining the clinical Infectious Disease team for eight weeks (including pediatric, adult, immunocompromised, and HIV and/or travel clinics). A dedicated off-site rotation both Primary Children’s Hospital and the Utah Public Health Lab is integrated into the training program, providing a comprehensive training experience. Fellows are selected for their potential as future directors of academic diagnostic microbiology laboratories, public health, and/or private industry within the clinical realm.
Upon completion of the program, fellows are expected to apply for subspecialty certification in Medical Microbiology through examinations by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM)
