The University of Utah Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling, also known as UUGPGC, is housed in the Department of Pediatrics. It is a two-year Master’s of Science program with full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.

The University of Utah offers a two-year master’s degree program in Genetic Counseling that integrates didactic coursework, fieldwork training, community activities, and an independent research project to best prepare students for a successful career in genetic counseling. The program also teaches the competencies necessary for students to pass the American Board of Genetic Counseling certification examination following graduation.
The University of Utah Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling or UUGPGC is housed in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESOM). The UUGPGC is an interdisciplinary collaboration between many internal departments with participation from several local hospitals and industry laboratories that contribute to students’ unique experiences during training. The UUGPGC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC), most recently in 2022 for the maximum period of 8 years. Upon completion of the program, graduates are expected to be proficient in the Practice Based Competencies set forth by the ACGC. By graduating from an accredited genetic counseling program, graduates are eligible to sit for the genetic counselor certification examination from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Our program is designed to guide students through the training process and help them develop into knowledgeable, effective, and supportive genetic counseling professionals who are prepared for all settings of practice.
