The forensic psychiatry fellow works with Dr. Durns on court-ordered and private civil and criminal cases throughout the 12-month training period. The forensic psychiatry fellow learns how to review collateral sources of information, conduct forensic psychiatric evaluations, prepare written forensic psychiatric reports, and testify in depositions and in court. Additionally, the fellows will participate in parallel case seminars, case supervision, didactic seminars, and have protected time for report writing while onsite at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute.

Utah State Hospital 

The forensic consultation rotation at Utah State Hospital is two days a week for 12 months. The forensic psychiatry fellow is assigned consultations of forensic patients on units for competency to stand trial restoration, not guilty by reason of insanity acquittees, offenders with mental disorders (OMD) mentally disordered sex offenders, and individuals who are on conservatorship status and involuntarily committed. The forensic psychiatry fellows provide consultation to general psychiatrists, nursing personnel, social workers, psychologists, recreational therapists, and psychiatric technicians on the assessment and management of mentally ill offenders on a wide variety of forensic issues.

Utah State Prison

The forensic psychiatry fellow receives training regarding the clinical management of detainees at the Utah State Prison for one day per week for 12 months. Fellows are supervised by board certified forensic psychiatrists with experience working in the Utah correctional system. Types of evaluations/care provided by the fellow at this site includes performing psychiatric evaluations of inmates referred for a psychiatric evaluation, forensic consultation to other clinicians on issues regarding malingering of psychiatric symptoms, and psychiatric medication management.
