The University of Utah is one of 21 research sites around the country participating in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, which is the largest long-term study of child and adolescent brain development and health in the United States. The landmark study by the National Institutes of Health will follow approximately 10,000 children beginning at ages 9-10 through adolescence into early adulthood; researchers at the U plan to follow 1,000 of these children. Recruitment is being facilitated by the Diagnostic Neuroimaging Lab and will be carried out over a two year period in partnership with area schools.
Using cutting-edge technology, researchers will determine how childhood experiences (such as sports, videogames, social media, unhealthy sleep patterns, and smoking) interact with each other and with a child’s changing biology to affect brain development and social, behavioral, academic, health, and other outcomes.
