Welcome to the website of the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion (CVP) program. We are pleased to have you here and invite you to explore our program, meet our exceptional faculty and staff, and learn more about our mission, vision, and future direction. We are deeply committed to educating and training the next generation of highly skilled, compassionate, and knowledgeable perfusionists.

Our program is distinctive in many ways. We are housed within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine—a division that is nationally and internationally recognized for its leadership in advancing heart and lung surgery. Being part of this environment offers our students unique opportunities to learn directly from world-class physicians, surgeons, and medical professionals in both clinical and didactic settings.

Since the program's inception, our students have excelled in research, clinical training, and community engagement. Many have received national recognition, including scholarships and awards, and have published in major perfusion journals. Their achievements are a testament to the quality of education and mentorship provided by our faculty.

With a student-to-staff ratio of approximately 10 to 17, our program is designed to provide students with personalized instruction and mentorship throughout their training. All 16 of our didactic perfusion instructors are actively practicing clinicians (4 are pediatric perfusionists at Primary Children's), bringing current, real-world expertise into the classroom and lab. This connection to active clinical practice ensures that students receive instruction that is both academically rigorous and clinically relevant. Additionally, students benefit from access to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery’s dedicated research department, opening opportunities to collaborate on innovative projects, contribute to ongoing studies, and publish meaningful research in the field of cardiovascular perfusion.

Located in Salt Lake City, our program benefits from a vibrant and diverse healthcare landscape. Students can complete many of their clinical rotations in-state at leading institutions such as:

  • University of Utah Hospital
  • Primary Children’s Medical Center
  • Intermountain Medical Center
  • Salt Lake City Veterans Administration Hospital
  • And other affiliated hospitals throughout Utah

These facilities offer exposure to a wide range of cases and patient populations, and the perfusionists who serve as clinical preceptors are among the best in the country.

Thank you for your interest in our program. We encourage you to explore the site further and to reach out with any questions. We look forward to connecting with you and sharing more about what makes our program exceptional.
