Principles of Basic Laparoscopic Surgery

Enrollment: Year-Round, best for use with structured cohort-based training

The Center for Global Surgery is creating a standard-setting instructional curricula for teaching how to set-up minimally invasive capacity in LMIC environments and how to expand it as a service available country-wide. The "Principles of Basic Laparoscopic Surgery" Course caters to both General Surgery & OB-GYN approaches of essential minimally-invasive surgery (MIS & MIGS), with supplemental modules for urologic and pediatric procedures (coming soon). Unique course delivery formats and follow-up coaching options support the Center for Global Surgery's sustainable drive to achieve health systems transformation in LMICs and to unlock surgical access for millions.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand set up for basic laparoscopic surgery
  • Describe critical steps for exploratory laparoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, ovarian cystectomy, and tubal ligation.
  • Learn important troubleshooting methods for safe laparoscopy

Minimally Invasive Surgery (aka Laparoscopic Surgery) is believed to be essential among cost-effective services available in resource limited settings and is proven to be catalytic for energizing subsequent surgical systems-focused interventions.  Our coursework prepares Surgeons Ob-Gyn physicians and support staff with essential prerequisite training necessary for acquiring full competencies in this type of surgical procedure at their hospitals. This course forms the basis of what we hope will be continuous improvement in laparoscopic skills and applicable techniques across a variety of surgeries and medical procedure, to directly increase the number of laparoscopically trained surgeons and ob-gyns in a country where this training is offered.
