Fellowship Programs in Plastic Surgery

Microvascular Reconstructive Fellowship

The University of Utah, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a one year, non-accredited fellowship in microvascular reconstructive surgery. Applicants must have completed a plastic surgery residency in an ACGME approved residency program. The fellowship year will provide experience with breast, head and neck, and extremity microsurgery for traumatic and oncologic defects. Fellows will be required to attend weekly didactic teaching conferences and will be involved in a research project which should result in publication or presentation.

Craniofacial Fellowship

The University of Utah, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a one year, non-accredited fellowship in craniofacial surgery. Applicants must have completed a plastic surgery residency in an ACGME approved residency program. This fellowship is designed to provide a broad and highly specialized experience in all facets of craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery. The fellowship will offer comprehensive training with a large clinical volume and research opportunities.

Pediatric Craniofacial Orthodontic Fellowship

The University of Utah, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a one year, non-accredited fellowship in pediatric craniofacial orthodontics. Applicants must have completed an ADA accredited orthodontic program. This fellowship is designed to train an orthodontist to a level of competency that enables them to recongnize, diagnose and treat patients with craniofacial anomalies and special needs in a hospital-based team care setting. Fellows will be part of the comprehensive cleft and craniofacial team. They will participate in didactic conferences with other trainees. Fellows will also engage in research related to craniofacial anomalies. 

Research Fellowship

The University of Utah, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a one year research fellowship. The fellowship follows the academic calendar from July 1 to June 30. This fellow will take a leading role in a number of projects and in writing multiple clinical plastic and reconstructive surgery manuscripts. The fellow will work with multiple faculty within the division to help design studies and complete previously initiated studies. At any given time, the fellow may be overseeing multiple projects.

Gender Affirming Surgery Fellowship 

The University of Utah Division of Plastic Surgery offers a 12-month fellowship in all aspects of gender affirming surgery. This is a comprehensive clinical and academic experience to gain expertise in all aspects of gender affirming surgery. The fellow will have clinical exposure to facial feminization procedures, masculinizing and feminizing chest surgeries, and masculinizing and feminizing genital surgeries (phalloplasty, metoidioplasty, vaginoplasty, vulvoplasty). The fellow will also learn the workings of a multidisciplinary transgender health group, participating in clinics and joint conferences with plastic surgery, urology, endocrinology, voice therapy, and physical therapy. Throughout the year, the fellow will participate in transgender health research, with the goal of presenting and publishing a peer reviewed research project. The fellow will have administrative responsibilities organizing a gender affirming surgery journal club, and teaching residents and medical students. The fellow will obtain an appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Division of Plastic Surgery, and will perform general plastic surgery procedures independently to maintain clinical skills in plastic surgery.
