Department of Surgery Division of Urology
Welcome to the Division of Urology at the University of Utah! Our Division includes faculty members who are expert in treating all genitourinary (urological) disorders. Our mission as a Division is to provide outstanding care to each of our patients, to educate future urologists and leaders in our field, and to advance the understanding of urologic disorders through important research – basic and clinical. We offer patient services at the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine (Andrology), VA Medical Center and Primary Children’s Medical Center. By offering a broad selection of subspecialists within the field, we serve as a resource to patients from all over the intermountain region, including: Utah, Nevada, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Many of our faculty members hold leadership positions both within their hospitals and as members of regional and national specialty organizations. Our faculty members have commonly been listed in The Best Doctors in America ® publication which is compiled by polling fellow physicians about which doctors they would see for their own care. We are also fortunate to have an excellent group of residents (doctors in training) who come from all across the country. About 50% of our recent program graduates have pursued prestigious fellowships at centers such as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, and UC-San Francisco (infertility/sexual medicine). Others have developed successful private practice positions throughout the country (Utah, California, Indiana, South Carolina, Montana, Oregon). The Division has several ongoing research efforts. Douglas Carrell, PhD directs a busy clinical program in assisted reproduction (semen analysis, IVF, ICSI) and also serves as mentor for doctoral candidates within his basic science lab, investigating areas involving sperm development/function and various causes of male infertility. Si Oottamasathien, MD heads an effort looking at genitourinary development through the use of a gene knock-out mouse model and is also investigating the function and capacities of stem cells from the urinary bladder. Additionally, there are multiple clinical research projects being carried out by our faculty in areas such as: prostate cancer, kidney cancer, hydronephrosis in children, prostate hyperplasia, kidney stone treatment and others. Thanks for visiting our website. The Division of Urology at the University of Utah holds as its major goal to both help define and to provide the best care possible to all patients who suffer from urological disorders. Patrick C. Cartwright, MD Professor of Surgery Division Chief of Urology
