Pain Medicine Fellowship

Fellows train at the Pain Management Center and complete the other requirements, such as acute pain, cancer pain, palliative care, orthopaedic spine, pediatric pain, headache clinic, and pelvic pain clinic at the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the Veterans' Administration Hospital, all located close to the Pain Management Center.

Perioperative Echocardiography Fellowship

The Division of Perioperative Echocardiography in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah offers a one-year fellowship in Perioperative Echocardiography. Since 2002, we have offered up to four positions per year. This fellowship is under the direction of Dr. Josh Zimmerman, MD, FASE.

Acute Pain Fellowship

The University of Utah offers a Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Fellowship with one to three positions per year. Fellows spend two days per week pursuing clinical fellowship activities solely dedicated to regional anesthesia and acute pain management and one day per week pursuing academic projects. For the remaining two days per week, fellows work as a faculty anesthesiologist in the operating room and are paid the full clinical incentive pay.

Cardiothoracic Fellowship

The University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year ACGME accredited Cardiothoracic Fellowship following the completion of three years of clinical anesthesia. The cardiac anesthesia service line provides anesthesia for approximately 800-1000 cases per year at the University Hospital and Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. The cases include VAD insertion, heart transplant, lung transplant, total artificial heart, major aortic surgery, minimally invasive valve replacement, valve sparing root replacement, structural heart procedures, ECMO, as well as transcatheter aortic valve implantation, MitraClip, and other transcatheter procedures. We have partnered with Primary Children’s Medical Center to offer an elective pediatric cardiac anesthesia experience. 12 of 13 of our cardiac anesthesiologists have achieved Level 3 training in echocardiography as defined by the American Society of Echocardiography. Our online transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography content is used across the world in nearly 100 healthcare institutions. Fellows will spend one month in the only anesthesia-directed full-service echo lab in the country, where they will be exposed to to the full breadth of cardiac echo services including high volume comprehensive TTE, echocardiography stress testing, and outpatient TEE.
