Recap: University of Utah Anesthesiology at ISAP and ASA 2024

The University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology had a strong presence at both the International Society of Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 2024 conferences. With faculty, fellows, and residents leading impactful presentations, moderating key discussions, and contributing to workshops, our team demonstrated their commitment to advancing anesthesia care, education, and research.

The 33rd Annual International Society of Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP) Meeting kicked off a busy and successful week for the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology. The ISAP conference, held just before the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 2024 meeting, brought together leaders in anesthetic pharmacology, where our faculty played significant roles.

  • Dr. Carina Jackman presented her impactful research, The SKOAP Study: A HEAL Initiative Trial, which focuses on improving outcomes for patients with knee osteoarthritis pain.
  • Our Department Chair, Dr. Talmage D. Egan, had the honor of presenting the prestigious ISAP Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Mervyn Maze for his groundbreaking contributions to anesthesia research.

Following ISAP, our department was also strongly represented at the ASA 2024 Conference, with faculty, fellows, and residents delivering presentations, moderating sessions, and leading workshops. Here is a recap of the presentations from our department's faculty, fellows, and residents:

  • Dr. Christian Guay kicked off the conference on Friday, October 18th, with his insightful presentation, No Brain is an Island: EEG-Guided Management in the Critically Ill.
  • Dr. Candace Chang moderated sessions on Remimazolam: A Safer Sedative? and NORA Procedures in Critically Ill Patients: Preparing for Imminent Disaster, guiding discussions on sedation safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Dr. Elizabeth Thackeray presented, "We are sorry to inform you..." Overcoming the Challenge of Not Matching, offering practical advice to future anesthesiology residents.
  • Dr. Jacob D. Nyfeler, one of our residents, presented a complex case study on the Anesthetic Management of a Patient with Multiple Comorbid Neuromuscular Disorders.
  • Dr. Daisy Feng, one of our fellows, shared her work on Management of Diabetes Insipidus Following Craniotomy for Ruptured Fusiform M3 Aneurysm and the Role of ROTEM in Early Detection of Coagulopathy during Complex Craniotomy.
  • Dr. Sean Runnels served as Co-Director for the Swimming with the Sharks Pitch Contest, fostering innovation in anesthesiology.
  • Dr. Talmage D. Egan led two impactful sessions: Cons: Narcotic-Free Anesthesia Should Be the Gold Standard for Ambulatory Settings and Applying the Pharmacology and Pharmacodynamics of Intravenous Anesthetics to TIVA and TCI.
  • Joseph Carrier, Cade Kartchner, and James Potts represented the University of Utah at the FAER Medical Student Posters session, sharing their innovative research.

The department also hosted a reunion for alumni, faculty, fellows, and residents, offering a valuable opportunity to reconnect and celebrate the shared achievements of the University of Utah anesthesia community.

With a wide range of presentations and a strong presence at the conference, our faculty, fellows, and residents demonstrated the University of Utah’s leading role in advancing anesthesiology and patient care. Congratulations to all our participants for their outstanding contributions!
