Congratulations to the Research Team Behind the Single-Syringe TIVA Study

We’re proud to recognize a team of University of Utah investigators whose innovative work on anesthesia delivery was recently published in Anesthesia & Analgesia.

The study, titled “Single-Syringe Total Intravenous Anesthesia With Propofol and Remifentanil: A Prospective Cohort Study,” evaluates the effectiveness of a long-standing but off-label approach developed at our institution—administering propofol and remifentanil in a single syringe for total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA).

Led by researchers and clinicians from across the department, the study focused on whether this simplified method could maintain adequate anesthesia in outpatient orthopedic procedures, using processed EEG monitoring to measure depth of hypnosis.

This work builds on over 25 years of institutional experience using the single-syringe technique and represents an important step in validating its safety and efficacy.

Congratulations to the research team!
