Research Labs & Groups
At the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology, our research spans groundbreaking work in pain management, brain health, perioperative medicine, and medical device innovation. From developing novel treatments for chronic pain to enhancing anesthesia recovery and neuromodulation, our interdisciplinary teams collaborate to push the boundaries of science and improve patient care.
ABL
Our laboratory specializes in developing and testing innovative medical devices for anesthesia and intensive care. With dedicated facilities for simulation, animal studies, and clinical research, we collaborate closely with bioengineers, anesthesiologists, and critical care physicians to advance patient care. Our work focuses on designing and refining drug delivery systems and monitoring technologies that enhance safety, efficiency, and outcomes in perioperative and critical care settings.
Taylor Lab
At the Taylor Lab, we investigate the biological, neurological, and psychological factors that drive variability in pain perception and treatment response. While over 100 million Americans experience chronic pain daily, their experiences differ widely—some feel little pain from intense stimuli, while others suffer from the lightest touch. Responses to treatment also vary, from placebo sensitivity to resistance to high-dose opioids. By uncovering the mechanisms behind these differences, we aim to improve pain management and advance more personalized treatment approaches.
UVRL
At the Utah Vascular Research Lab (UVRL), we study oxygen transport from air to tissue, with a focus on the connection between vascular and skeletal muscle function. Our research explores how aging and age-related diseases—such as COPD, heart failure, and hypertension—impact muscle performance. By uncovering the mechanisms that limit function, we aim to advance treatments that improve mobility and overall health in aging populations.
APR Group
The Anesthesia Psychiatry Research (APR) group is an interdisciplinary collaboration across Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and Radiology at the University of Utah. Our team of clinicians and scientists is dedicated to advancing novel interventions for mood and pain disorders through cutting-edge research.
