Teresa DeAtley Elected to University Academic Senate
The Department of Family & Preventive Medicine (DFPM) is proud to announce that Public Health Assistant Professor Teresa DeAtley, PhD, MPH, has been elected to the University of Utah Academic Senate. Representing the School of Medicine, Dr. DeAtley will begin a three-year term in the upcoming academic year.
The University Academic Senate serves as a platform for faculty to participate in decisions related to the university’s academic operations, including budgeting, educational policies, and administrative appointments. “This is an important venue for providing input and staying informed about key university business,” said Public Health Division Chief Jim VanDerslice, PhD.
Dr. DeAtley shared her enthusiasm about joining the Academic Senate, and the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across campus: “I plan to build new relationships with colleagues and learn about their priorities as educators, mentors, and researchers.”
With a background in social and behavioral science, Dr. DeAtley aims to bring an interdisciplinary perspective to discussions. “I value being in a department that brings expertise ranging from clinical care, translational science, public health, and community engagement. I look forward to participating in this form of shared governance that impacts educational programs on the Health Sciences campus and Humanities,” she shared.
In her new role, Dr. DeAtley plans to keep DFPM informed about proposed academic policies and their impact on educational programs within the School of Medicine. She is also interested in engaging in broader discussions about the ever-evolving landscape of higher education. “I am curious to see which issues the Academic Senate will focus on related to the future of higher education as we navigate a challenging time for public and private education systems across the United States,” shared Dr. DeAtley.
She is also deeply committed to supporting students throughout her term. Dr. DeAtley plans to advocate for robust student services, explore ways to enhance support systems, and promote initiatives that prioritize student well-being and success.
Congratulations to Dr. DeAtley on this well-deserved appointment.
