Scholarships Overview

The Division of Public Health Scholarships are made possible through the generous contributions from friends and alumni of the Division of Public Health. Current students receive a list of available scholarships and the application form each fall semester.

Meghan Arnold Scholarship: Meghan Arnold was a former PhD student in the Division of Public Health, dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of humanity. In her memory, this scholarship is to help defray educational costs for qualified undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public Health.

Global Public Health Learning Abroad Scholarship: This general scholarship helps defray educational costs for qualified undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public Health.

Global Health Innovation Competition Scholarship: A general scholarship to award an undergraduate or graduate student who has completed a Learning Abroad program and desires to return to the same region to implement an innovative idea in collaboration with a faculty mentor for improving health.

Charles Hughes Memorial Scholarship: A general scholarship established to recognize Dr. Hughes, former Director of the Public Health Program (1979-1997).

F. Marian Bishop Scholarship: This general scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Bishop, former Chair of the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine (1984-1994) and head of the Public Health Program from 1997 to 1999.

James C. Reading Scholarship: A general scholarship established to recognize Dr. Reading’s dedication and service toward developing Biostatistics within the Public Health Program. Dr. Reading will be involved in the selection process.

Pete Suazo Scholarship: The late Utah State Senator Pete Suazo worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for the Hispanic community – indeed, for all minority citizens – in the state of Utah. He was also a champion of public health issues for minorities, supporting reduced tobacco use and substance abuse, advocating immunizations for adults and children, and improving access to healthcare for all Utah Citizens.

Opportunity Scholarship: This scholarship is available for students from all backgrounds who are fully matriculated in a Division of Public Health degree program. This scholarship aims to support and increase community awareness within the student body and health workforce. Community awareness requires recognizing the unique experiences and perspectives of individuals across different geographies, cultures, faith traditions, physical abilities, genders, socioeconomic statuses, and other diverse characteristics.

Rod L. Betit Endowed Leadership Scholarship: A general scholarship established in 2003 in the name of Rod L. Betit to support scholarships in Public Health.

Rigdon Behavioral Research Scholarship: This scholarship, established in 2005 in honor of Michael A. Rigdon, PhD, supports graduate students in the Public Health Program in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, health behavioral change, and integrated behavior and medical care.

J Leavitt Endowed Maternal & Child Health Scholarship: A general scholarship established in 2004 to support the study of child and maternal health in Public Health.

PH Alumni Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a student who has proven potential to make future contributions within the field of Public Health.

International Service Learning Scholarship: A general scholarship established to support student international service learning for a qualified undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public Health.

Meghan Arnold: A general scholarship to help defray educational costs for qualified master's of public health graduate students enrolled in a Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public Health.

Ed Yates Media Endowment Fund Scholarship: A general scholarship to help defray educational costs for qualified undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public Health.
