How to Apply

 How to Develop & Submit a CTN Concept Proposal with the GIN.

Thank you for your interest in applying for a project in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) Greater Intermountain Node (GIN). Before submitting, please make sure to review the information below.

A. How to Collaborate:

  1. Direct GIN Collaboration: Direct collaboration with the GIN involves small pilot projects requiring personnel support, such as research assistants, database programming, statistical analyses, and addiction/methodological expertise. Please contact node PIs to initiate collaboration—no formal concept proposal required.
  2. Small-scale CTN Projects: Small scale CTN projects are approximately 1-2 year endeavors. These projects can include: observational/ epidemiological studies, ancillary studies to large-scale CTN projects, secondary data analyses. Please contact node PIs to initiate collaboration—formal concept proposal required, see below for instructions.
  3. Large-scale CTN Projects: Large-scale CTN projects are typically multisite clinical trials or large health system intervention projects and last more than 2 years. Please contact node PIs to initiate collaboration—formal concept proposal required, see below for instructions.

B. Initial Steps:

STEP 1: Have a conversation of interest with the GIN Principal Investigators (PIs), Adam Gordon and Jerry Cochran. If you need assistance in scheduling a time with them please contact Mitchell Garets.

STEP 2: Develop your project background and aims. This is NOT a complete aims page. Please keep this step short and concise – no more than half a page. Submit this to Jerry Cochran as soon as possible.

STEP 3: Have a conference call with the GIN Team. Once the two steps above are completed, someone from GIN will contact you to help organize a time for this.

C. Concept Proposal Submission Steps:

STEP 1: After the first 3 initial steps, you are ready to begin development of concept proposal. All CTN study concepts generally should include:

  1. Title Page
  2. Narrative (3 pages)
  3. References
  4. Budget (projected/estimated)

Please note that these are general requirements. The GIN staff will provide you with specific instructions and examples as concept development begins.

STEP 2: Review with multiple reviewers over several weeks.

STEP 3: Once concepts are completed, concepts should be submitted to the GIN PIs Adam Gordon & Jerry Cochran. Concept due dates will be assigned by PIs once concepts are approved ready.

STEP 4: Following concept submission to NIDA, reviews will be communicated within 2-6 weeks.
